About La Habra
A tree in La Habra ,CA is the parent plant to almost all the avocados grown in the world today. Unfortunately, the tree died in 2002, but not before it left plenty of offspring to replace it. The story goes like this. The original seed was planted by A.R, Rideout of nearby Whittier. Mr. Rideout was kind of the Johnny Appleseed of the avocados. He loved to plant avocados wherever he went and picked up seeds wherever he went also. This particular seed was first planted by Mr. Rideout, but later was purchased by Mr. Rudolph Hass who planted the seedling in his new orchard. Mr. Hass did not particularly like the tree, and made many attempts to graft other varieties to it. All of these attempts failed; finally Mr. Hass planned on cutting down the tree. However, his children loved the fruit from the tree and convinced their Dad to leave the tree along. The tree was a plentiful producer and Mr. Hass made an agreement with Harold Brokaw to sell the fruit and to promote the trees. The tree died in 2002 and the wood is saved at a Ventura nursery. Residents of the area can use the La Habra ,CA yellow pages to find nurseries selling the trees.
